Date to timestamp

The selected date is interpreted in your browser’s local time zone.

What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp counts elapsed time from January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. Because it identifies an instant rather than a formatted date, the same value can be displayed in any time zone.

Seconds vs. milliseconds

Many server systems use seconds, while JavaScript uses milliseconds. A current timestamp therefore has about 10 digits in seconds and 13 digits in milliseconds. This converter detects the unit automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How does automatic seconds or milliseconds detection work?

Values below 100 billion are treated as seconds. Larger values are treated as milliseconds, which matches the practical range of modern Unix timestamps.

Does a Unix timestamp include a time zone?

No. A Unix timestamp represents one instant in time. Time zones only affect how that instant is displayed as a readable date.

Is my date information uploaded?

No. All timestamp and date conversions run locally in your browser.
